#MeToo

Updated: Dec 13, 2018

The MeToo sites home page has a video as soon as you open it up. It entails different stories of sexual assault from around the world, it offers an email sign up and the option to enter your phone number so that you can be contacted. The other pages on the website are for donations and the resources that the campaign offers, such as helplines for anyone that has been affected.

As I mentioned above the site engages with their audience as soon as you open the first page. This is done through a short video from the founder of the movement, which originated more than 10 years ago on Myspace. Also on the home page there is an email and telephone sign up option so that you can keep up to date with the latest news from the movement. In addition, there are many contact details for hotlines of different facets of sexual assault. Lastly, the site offers a page with a multitude of social media platforms that you can share to, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The #MeToo campaign gets their users participating by offering the use of the hashtag to turn it into a trending subject on Twitter or Instagram, this lets lots of people around the world connect on the issue. Many celebrities came out in support of the campaign in the wake of the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein. This is what catapulted the campaign into the mainstream with a flurry of celeb’s using the hashtag to show solidarity with the women and men who had been abused. One of the only men to come out and speak of his own experience of sexual abuse was the actor Terry Crews who had been assaulted by Weinstein himself at a party in LA. The site offers a donation option too, these donations are used to fund different charities that the campaign is linked with. In addition, a small way men could raise awareness of the movement would be to wear a badge or for celebrities it was a white rose which they would wear on the red carpet to show solidarity with those who had been affected.

The #MeToo Campaign has been incredibly successful with many people attributing the exposure of sexual assault in its highest levels the reason why they too wanted to share their experiences. Awareness of the movement skyrocketed on Twitter with over 1.7 million tweets including the hashtag #MeToo and over 85 countries with at least 1000 #MeToo tweets. Meanwhile the Facebook page has over 30,000 likes, with another 36,000 following the page.
