The know your lemons social media campaign was created to raise awareness of the different signs of breast cancer, one third of cancer deaths worldwide could be prevent through education and screenings. Yet just 4% of women know the signs of breast cancer.
The worldwide breast cancer website engages with its viewers by offering a multitude of ways to stay connected, be this through their website or app. It also gives you the option to donate like most charities. The know your lemons app gives a variety of educational tools such as learning to self-exam, booking a mammogram and helping women to prepare for their first breast test; what to expect etc. The website also has a blog which offers stories on the work that they are doing in different countries, places such as Turkey and Malaysia. Or the research process behind the 12 signs of breast cancer.
The site offers users many ways to participate such as its online store which allows you donate to the charity while still getting something to show for it. They have know your lemons breast cancer awareness poster sets which can be put up anywhere, in schools, community centres even your own home. It also comes in a variety of Languages so that no one is left uneducated. In addition they also offer mugs which can be taken with you anywhere to spread the word. The site also provides a “join” option, this gives the user a variety of activities that they can do in the real world, such as a “know your lemons” education party. This could be organised by a teacher or a community leader so that women in their community have the knowledge to check themselves with confidence. The campaign provides larger scale participation via corporate sponsorships. This gives big companies ways to show their support as well. They provide Sponsor Acknowledgement through stickers and banners that can be sent out to their office with the campaign Logo and text. Furthermore, they offer Creative consultation for co-branding. This means that if the company was to bring out a new advertisement they could integrate the “#Know Your Lemons” Logo to show that they are working in partnership.
On a whole the “#Know Your Lemons” campaign has been incredibly successful as it reached over 166 million people in just 3 weeks and over 200 million as of January 2018. This is an amazing feat considering it was started on Facebook by a young woman living with breast cancer.
